The Hidden World
2009
The second instalment of the Tom Scatterhorn trilogy. In this Tom meets the redoubtable Pearl Smoot who turns out to be traveller like him. She needs his help. Urgently. Together they set off on a perilous quest that takes them from the Scatterhorn Museum to the foothills of the Himalayas, and then on into the steaming jungles of Polynesia … Under a volcano they find a secret labyrinth that leads them to the heart of Don Gervase Askary’s beetle kingdom …
This is a big story with some big scenes and a lot of new characters whom I became very fond of. To research it I read a stack of books about insects and I also wrote up the strange family history of Don Gervase Askary that I would then use in the third book, The Forgotten Echo. The Hidden World turned out to be a rollercoaster adventure and great fun to write.
The Spiderwick Chronicles meets Indiana Jones in this irresistible and adventurous tale of time travel, exotic globe-trotting, mysterious and secret worlds, and a diabolical villain —all amidst the intrepid Tom Scatterhorn's race against time to save his loved ones before it's too late.
